Eid al-Ghadir, the 18th of Dhul Hijjah, is the most important Shia holiday marking the appointment of Imam Ali as the successor of Prophet Muhammad at Ghadir Khumm.
On the 18th of Dhul Hijjah in the 10th year of Hijra, during his return from the Farewell Pilgrimage at Ghadir Khumm, Prophet Muhammad appointed Imam Ali as his successor, saying: 'Whoever I am his master, Ali is his master.'
